Let's get things going here and trade some stories of higher-mileage vehicles.

My 1986 VW Jetta currently has 355,000km (220,000 miles) on the original engine, which has never been apart except to change a few seals and gaskets (no it's NOT a Diesel). It still runs great and thrives on my daily abuse. Of course the hydraulic lifters have been quite shot for some time now....

Hello bullrider,

Sorry I did not respond sooner was out of town all day today.

Well it seems I have a problem with the Cherokee. It has approx. 182,000 kilometers on it and just recently started to suffer 'blow off' (so they told me at the garage). The first I noticed it was after a long trip (about 500km) and right after I had it serviced for the winter. All fluids topped up.

By the time I returned home I had noticeable oil leakage underneath the vehicle. Upon inspecting under the hood, oil spray was considerable and my oil was down to almost nil.

Now I have taken it to two service stations, one of them the dealer. And they have told me that probably one of the rings has worn out (or is starting to) and this is causing the blow off. They basically recommended either replacing the engine with a rebuilt one or brand new. Either way I am looking at over $3000. Cdn. Gulp!!!!

One mechanic I talked to told me that these things should last longer than that, mentioning he has seen ones running fine with over 300,000km.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance
