Winbond plans GDR,seeks T$10 bln loan-RPT
TAIPEI, Dec 9 (Reuters) - Taiwan microchip maker Winbond Electronics said on Wednesday it planned to issue global depository receipts and obtain a T$10 billion syndicated loan in the first quarter of 1999.

''We have already received a mandate for the syndicated loan and are waiting approval of the GDRs from (Taiwan's) Securities and Futures Commission,'' said Thomas Hsu, director of Winbond's Finance division.

Hsu said the Bank of Taiwan , China Trust Commercial Bank and the First Commercial Bank would grant the T$10 billion loan for Winbond to issue 200 million shares in GDRs.

Hsu said the 200 million shares would be issued sometime in the first quarter of 1999 after Taiwan's securities commission granted approval.

Based on Tuesday's closing price, the Winbond GDRs could raise T$6.48 billion (US$200 million).

Hsu said the loan and GDRs would be used to help with capacity expansion at Winbond's newly completed fifth factory. The new factory will be used to manufacture dynamic random access memory or DRAM.

''We still need to buy machinery for Fab 5,'' Hsu said.

Hsu said the fifth factory is expected to go online in the third quarter of 1999, depending on the stability of the DRAM market.

(US$ equals T$32.343)

SIII and ALSC are partners in the wafer fab. That is a large hidden value for SIII and ALSC. I remember previously one analyst was valuing the ALSC part of USC foundry at $5+/share.
