Bob,

This IS the DELL thread. Dell is traded on an American exchange. The impeachment of the President of the US undeniably has an effect on the market and DELL. IMO anything that has an effect on DELL is on topic though most of us label posts not specifically about Dell with OT. Where are you going to draw this line? There are lots of posts on this thread about CPQ, INTC, MSFT and its trial, etc. with no mention of DELL. What side of the line are these on?

If you are going to police threads for topicality can you point me to the rules you are going to use?

TIA
Steve

SI Admin (Bob): <<I would appreciate it if anybody who wants to get into political discussions do so on one of the threads that were created for this purpose.>>

May I refer you to The First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States?

Stockjet.

SI Admin (Bob), DELL is influenced by the market conditions, and the situation in Washington does effect the market. Therefore, it is relevant to DELL to discuss political pressures on the market and DELL.

I do think it sometimes gets out of hand, and I hope your message helps to curd some of the venom. Nevertheless, I do want to establish its relevance, within reason.

Respectfully submitted,

LONGonDELL

Bob,

The noise level on this thread has always been high, which parenthetically has been a great contribution to the success of SI - 1.25% of the 6,752,579 messages that SI proudly advertises have originated from this one thread!

This thread can be intimidating to casual visitors, but they do have the option of visiting a number of other dell threads that are less voluminous and more focused on narrow dell issues, such as DELL: Facts, Stats, News and Analysis.

As has been expressed by other threadmembers, it is impossible to seperate the performance of a stock from the events of the outside world, and this thread tends to use a macro model in evaluating dell's future moves. However, virtually all of these posts are politely labeled with OT in the first line of the text, giving readers the opportunity of skipping them.

Rather than admonishing this exuberant thread for incorporating a world view into their dell discussions, a systems solution might be more appropriate. IMO, SI has long needed an IGNORE feature, so that individuals who make repetitive or insulting posts can be screened. At the same time, the screen could be designed so posts with OT on the first line could be skipped. It would be an elegant solution, that would increase the value of the threads to the SI community.

I've been an SI member since 1995, and it has had a profound impact on my investing fortunes. I hope that you guys will continue to expand and improve its services and bring more insights to the individual investor.

Regards, Frank

Bob -
I agree with Uncle Frank - a simple method of setting a filter to skip posts either by poster or those which contain a string like **OT** in the first line would be a much better way to satisfy those who don't want to see certain types of posts. This would be invaluable on many threads where on-topic but content-free posting is the norm.

It is a pretty subtle line to say that the potential for impeachment, which might cause a large swing in Dell's stock price, is off topic, any more than postings of potential acts by greenspan or the health of the asian economy, all of which are equally off topic.

Maybe rather than the **OT** that courteous posters have been including, we should start our off-topic discussions with 'Thread - how do you think this will affect Dell stock?' followed by a discussion of Thomas Jefferson's morals or whatever. That would be politically correct, I guess. I think you are wading into a real difficult area.

Bob....I'm guessing here, but your post seems to have less than universal appeal! Help me out, am I right????<g>

Hey, at least you are being *paid* to listen to it,eh? (instead of the other way around...this from a "grandfathered" cheapseats observer!)

Cheers!

RE: Off topic posts

I think you have a very narrow view of what is relevant to DELL. I think most of us appreciate the opportunity to complain about truly abusive posters who would otherwise ruin the thread, and we all recognize that there are more appropriate threads for purely political discussions, but for many people -- who concentrate their investments in DELL -- it is annoying to have to leave their favorite thread to express their views on vital public questions. If the politickers are interlopers or newbies on the thread who are using their membership largely for non-DELL political spamming, then warn them off, or we will. If the political posters are old sweats on the thread, let 'em emit steam. I suggest that any one with a political/constructive post ratio of > 1/1, should be barred at least until the President is convicted, while any one with a cumulative political/constructive post ratio of < 0.1 should be allowed to sound off.
Any one who is too lazy to push the "next" button, should buy a Dell PII 450 and a cable modem and enjoy the sensation of the political winds rushing through his/her hair.

Hmmm

A DELL thread...Didn't know we had one.

I used to read Dell comics when I was a kid.

I had a really bad crush on Little LuLu.

Fortunately I met some Scientologists in Toronto, and they helped me rid myself of those engrams.

So...what comic characters is Dell featuring now.?
