Robert may well be exaggerating that particular claim, Borzou. I don't know if any Supreme Court seats are likely to open up in the next 2 years, I don't think so. Lower courts, I think the Reagan-era appointments are dominant enough numerically that it doesn't matter much, and Clinton doesn't get much slack from the Senate in confirmation of judges who are anything beyond moderate on the political scale.

But on the broader front, abortion is certainly a central issue to the moral reformationist wing of the Republican party. Did you read the Andrew Sullivan NYT Magazine article, "The Scolds"? I've been meaning to scan it in and post relevant excerpts. That article credited it as the issue for that part of the party. I wouldn't put much stock in Robert's causal connection, but I think the driving forces on both fronts have a lot in common. Not to mention the papal knight.

Cheers, Dan.

I think that's incorrect. Mild understatement. It's absurd to think that the GOP is willing to commit political suicide ( in your opinion ) just so Al Gore can appoint some Supreme Court Judges.
