Dave: Thanks for your response, waiting to see how Ameritech in the Indianapolis area responds to ADSL. I hope in the near future to see first hand how a DSL installation is performed.

Should I set my mind on a couple of boring hours or what? <g>

Thx,
Stephen

Dave:

My loop distance is 40,000 ft. Are you aware of any statistics that describe the distance vs. % of loops for the 20% of the loops that are in XS of 18,0000. I have come across one individual who informed me the "average maximum loop distance" (I presumed to be in the US) was around 20,000 ft. Situated at 40,000 ft, that doesn't make me feel very good.

My immediate concern is the economics of developing & installing the technology to deliver DSL over longer loop distances. If 80% of the 20% you refer to fall w/i, let's say 24,000 ft., leaving a balance of 4% of the total market along the longest of loops, how much economic incentive is their for these telcos to even be concerned with DSL beyond the virtual 24,000 ft threshold I speak of. This is my concern.

Stephen's post struck a chord w/me because I share his concerns. What's it gonna take to get DSL delivered to the fringes of the loop? If the technology is available, great, but the more critical issue to be concerned with is the cost.

Is it possible to situate a DSLAM at the DLC box rather than the CO? Is it gonna take the extension of a fiber-optic cable to the DLC to DSL deliverable over the longest loop distances?
