The South will rise again. Next time you're in Portland you can find yourself a copy of The Southern Partisan magazine at that big book store.

One of my favorite southern humorists was Lewis Grizzard. (ahem) It was a truly sad day when he died. His books are still in print. You'd enjoy them. And look for Florence King, my absolutely favorite misanthrope. She writes like Janice.

My maiden name is French, as well. Rare. I changed it when I got married because I was tired of telling readers how to pronounce it, and spelling it for listeners. I think in my entire life only French people from Louisiana ever pronounced it right the first time. When I was in school, waiting for the teacher to call the roll on the first day of class, I would wait until the teacher stopped and looked nonplussed. Then I would raise my hand, and say, "That's me."
