The South will rise again. Next time you're in Portland you can find yourself a copy of The Southern Partisan magazine at that big book store. One of my favorite southern humorists was Lewis Grizzard. (ahem) It was a truly sad day when he died. His books are still in print. You'd enjoy them. And look for Florence King, my absolutely favorite misanthrope. She writes like Janice.

I changed it when I got married because I was tired of telling readers how to pronounce it, and spelling it for listeners. I think in my entire life only French people from Louisiana ever pronounced it right the first time. When I was in school, waiting for the teacher to call the roll on the first day of class, I would wait until the teacher stopped and looked nonplussed. Then I would raise my hand, and say, "That's me."
