Chip,

You are right...the 32 bit spin isn't working anymore. On several occasions, TDFX did admit that part of the reason for omitting 32bpp support in V3 was cost/time constraints. But they always fell back on the "and it isn't even useful now" line, or the old "framerates cut in half" story. Well, whether ATI has crippled 16 bit or added hardware to enhance 32 bit is a moot point. Bottom line- you can get decent frame rates with 32 bit. And these are the competitions boards, so we should be able to get GREAT fram rates...

To all- thanks for the bit on the Hard drive. Have to finish up a little work, then I am back to building the computer.

Some of the "Fun" problems I have had include:

Getting that damned cd-rom enabled...thought I had all the drivers ...wrong :)

Getting the HD formatted- ugh---used a messed up startup disk that had fdisk, but not format...

had edit.com on startup disk, but not qbasic.exe...couldn't edit autoexec and config...which I planned to do to get Cd going...

Dimd Fusion AGP- oops- forgot to install agp-pci bridge...got that done, but then...oops, need USB OSR2.1.. *ugh* went to MSFT page, found the file, went to download, and OOPS! I am not a "partner" with Mr.Softee, and he wants me to pay to get the file. Fortunately, found it on the web...

downloaded 3dmark99...now I have a slow modem connection, so 15 megs takes a long time...set it for overnight...woke up, checked it...97% complete- and "smart" downloader can't resume....ugh..

Should be finished in a little while though.

Are current 32 bit benchmarks accurate?

Are there games that really use 32 bit textures? I don't think Quake 2 does, for instance.

There may be a visual difference because of multitexturing 8 bit or 16 bit textures, but we may not be seeing the true performance hit of 32 bit multitextured 3D.
