Thanks for the information you provided on the $1.00 sale of almost worthless securities.

To my chagrin, I own one such security. In my case, E*Trade can't tell me whether it's worthless or not. There seems to be no information at their fingertips. Is there an easy way to track down what happened to the company? It's my hope that they were acquired but I never received any information on such an event. I acquired the stock in 1990 when my account was at a different brokerage house.

Colin,
I have a vague understanding that you can't just transfer the shares... that the transaction must be a trade through a marketmaker/exchange. I know this doesn't really make sense but that seems not infrequent with tax law.

Am I confusing something else?
