Wiley, SOmetimes the cable modem operators "throttle" the cable modems to slow then down for load sharing among a neighbourhood. This throttle is usually on a prom on the board they insert in your machine.
If you use the Cyrix machine as a peer with 2 ethernet cards you can then use it's faster speed to serve the other machine. Others have told how to change this prom in some usnets??. Did you simply move the card to the modem back and forth?, or get a new card for the new machine. ??switch the cards??
A friend of mine has an older cable modem with full BW and he has 5 systems on an ethernet network using it and has excellent performance levels. Lately they have begun to forbid this and people have started using masquerade programs to let the cable see on one number. SInce I do not have a cable modem I have no direct experience with them.(Feb 99 is when they get here in my area of Toronto)
Search on this subject and see what you get.

Wily, actually, before jumping into complex matters
of network speed testing, try to benchmark your
systems with some low-level tests. Try
sysopt.com
intelligentfirm.com
or alike.
