I found the following sales tax information for several of the leading
on line booksellers. AMZN must collect sales taxes for goods shipped to Washington State (Headquarters located there). AMZN has its distribution center in Delaware where there is no sales tax. BKS
must collect a sales tax on shipments to NY, NJ and VA (Headquarters and distribution centers), Borders must collect sales taxes for shipments to Mich (Headquarters) and Tenn (distribution center). IAW
Wal-Mart web site sales taxes are collected on all U.S. shipments.
It is interesting that BKS and Borders have stores located around the
country and do not have to collect sales taxes on internet sales while Wal-Mart does have to collect the sales tax on internet sales. Does anyone know when all companies will be required to collect sales taxes
on all internet sales shipped to U.S. locations ?

Glenn and others:
Why is it that AMZN's stock price moved significantly higher last week
while BKS and Borders moved very little. Why aren't BKS and Borders
getting at least some recognition for their internet operations ? Finally, the survey results on consumer satisfaction with internet book sellers as reported in the WSJ yesterday showed that AMZN's book prices were relatively expensive compared to the low cost online sellers such as WAL-Mart but inexpensive when compared to list price. But who
pays list price for books in this day and age ? Borders discounts
best sellers by 30% in their stores and 40% online. Thanks for your
comments.
