I read about this, too, David. As I recall, it was in _Forbes_? What I do remember is that the article was printed on paper rather than on a web site.

Since the article I have wondered from time to time how their business' were doing--but not enough to research.

There might be a question of which came first here. The chicken or the egg. I think VARs may have been making white boxes before BTO for the branded market. But, I'm not an expert on the topic.
