I think prices have already dropped low enough to induce panic among oil producing nations as well as small oil companies and oil service companies.

A recent article in the Wall Street Journal emphasized what a great thing low oil prices for US comsumers. Of course not a word was said about the implications for the US of massive instability in oil producing nations.

The current "oil will remain depressed for many years" mantra in the media reminds me of the slew of negative articles that appeared near the bottom of the 1973-75 bear market in stocks -- the greatest buying opportunity in history.
