Apratim, as I suggested I disagree with a few here including yourself and I dont want to get too deep into this technically. However,Assuming a single server and storage configuration, order segmenting into components can very easily and transparently be done using database triggers (perhaps on updateable database views) in real time. Ad hoc calculations may then proceed for each division w/o problems. I completely disagree with this statement. The advantages are two fold, first, consolidation may be simplified using database views thus reducing development cost and next, either redundant IT groups are eliminated or practises of diverse IT groups are standardized, making SOPs for maintainence, backup and recovery plans less complex and easier to follow. So you have the benefits and avoid the headaches. It doesnt work that way. Eliminating redundant depts in IT sounds good but there is a tremendous amount lost in specific business knowledge. Besides its not like if some dept buys and NT box to manage their business and put analytical apps on there that it is some isolated refridgerator box. Hes still on the network, and if the organization decides to consolidate backup procedures with tivoli or whatever they can. But the system itself, the database that runs on it and the business processes it automates are removed from the main host and thats the objective. Im not sure what you are trying to get at with your small business questions... I guess it depends on what you mean by "small". Of course a retail shop or something really tiny is going to lease everything, but for example an olive distributor that I know of recently bought their own NT box and hired 2 people to run it vs. renting - they felt having their own technology was key to business and there were no decent rental options available. They do lease from pacbell the phone service however so I suppose if somebody offered the technology they needed at a reasonable cost they would have preferred to lease. Michelle
