RE: great post One of the many wonderful things about this country is that no one gives a damn about what the Supreme Court says about the way we practice our religions or atheism. The SC may want to open their proceedings with a prayer and Congress and the Armed Forces may want to have chaplains but no one cares until they start messing with other people's beliefs. Out here we have pagan priests blessing the opening of government buildings and the state Supreme Court upholding the rights of pagans to trespass on private lands to practice their hideous rites (including, I presume, human sacrifice). I always enjoy those public occasions where the masses bow their heads and I can make eye-contact with many of the skeptics in the audience. When I was a kid, our teachers in public school made us report every monday on where we went to church on Sunday, and then fussed at us if we believed in child baptism. Who knew? so I went along. I still disapprove of child baptism (along with sacrifice to Moloch). When some rich Jews who were refused membership in the Capital City and Athletic Clubs built a town club next door to our school, we were solemnly warned not to trespass, especially around Passover, presumably to prevent our being being served with bitter herbs and sweet wine. Our female teachers were also forbidden to marry, but apparently not to shack up. Amazing! When the rule was abrogated, all of these 40 and 50 year-old hags suddenly got married. How they do that? As to the music, I draw the line at Buddhist chants and atonality. Plainsong is okay, and I love Bach and Sousa. As long as everything is in a foreign language and there is major key and the tone changes occasionally, who cares about the words? Religion should be kept where it belongs. In other peoples' homes and churches, and other tall buildings that might collapse if there actually is an angry God or incompetent structural engineers. School should be reserved for education in objectively falsifiable sciences, like physics, C++, spelling, mathematics, basketball, music, chemistry, geology, paleontology, recess, and lunch. Children should be allowed either to pray or to study (but not both). Teachers should be allowed either to preach or teach (but not both). We should keep the students and teachers who do better on the SAT's.
