When it comes to that $330 hog, the farm lobby fails to mention the time labor spices wood it takes to change the hog into cured smoked ham sausage bacon..... Yes, it is out of line, and I have (almost) given up pork because of the price mark-ups. One can not forget, though, that time = money. If the hog farmers were sharp, they would do as some turkey farmers have done. They are select open range raising of turkey. This produces the most wonderful lean flavorful bird one has eaten. They then market direct to the customer and process the
bird themselves (of by a small local butcher) and soak up all that money which would go to all the middle men.
I have written to several mining companies I own and suggest they become involved in direct marketing of metals direct to the customer - to do the same as the turkey farmer above. One has started (in a small way) HM, though not quite in the way I had in mind.

I can remember when graduating from high school in '74 how the talk in the papers was of how the middle man was jerking us all on food prices because the farmer was getting such a poor cut. Nothing seems to have changed. But the low grain prices have resulted in very cheap cereal here.

I'm sure your wages are much higher but I'm wondering if you have anything left after taxes, housing and car insurance. ;)

Oh, and electricity for a 4 bedroom house with fridge and freezer here is $65 a month.
