<<<<I can remember when graduating from high school in '74 how the talk in the papers was of how the middle man was jerking us all on food prices because the farmer was getting such a poor cut. Nothing seems to have changed. But the low grain prices have resulted in very cheap cereal here.>>>>

Last week I priced out hard spring WHEAT for use in breadmaking:

- at local feed mill in BC, Canada per 55# sack C$19.99
- at farmer's gate in Alberta prairies per 62# C$5.00
- I believe at the elevator it is approx C$3.00 or so. North American farmers are going broke at these prices. Appears that the Asian flu is responsible for the lack of demand.

Found out that buying grain from the farmer or the elevator is a dicy business. A group of farmers told me that 80% of the grain is now disiccated. This means that it is sprayed with a herbacide (likely a dillution of Roundup) in August. This kills the plant and the wheat "seeds" dry on the stalk. The farmer then threshes the grain without having to windrow it, thus saving $ and they choose a hot time to desiccate the grain so that weather is not a problem.

This IMO is a disgusting practice and is putting roundup sprayed grain into every mouth in the nation, ie: in the bread and other products manufactured from it.

One can tell if it has NOT been desiccated by sprouting the seeds. The desiccated will mostly not sprout while the NON desiccated will sprout the majority of seed.

Anyone wonder why cancer is no the rise?
