But I think many people on this thread are
dreaming if you think that WCDMA can be stopped.

WCDMA has already been stopped!!! QCOM has said they will not license unless QCOM's conditions are complied with. If they could have gone without the licenses they would have.

Raymond,

So what you're saying is that there's going to be a drawn out hype-filled court battle?

Raymond: To which version of W-CDMA are you referring -- the one that SETI selected as the European 3g standard using a 4.0x chip rate, or the one ERICY is now pushing with a 3.8x rate? <g>

I would love to know which one of these is "unstoppable", so I may invest accordingly.

TIA,

mmeggs

Raymond,

I've just spent some time looking around the 3G partnership site.

3gpp.org

One of the Documents on the site dated 12/6/98, a pdf file, is correspondence with the CDG. Qualcomm is a member of T1, one of the member organizations. Clearly they have not been entirely excluded. Whether they've been given a fair hearing is another question.

Is there some reason why this group HAS to decide against harmonizing with CDMA2000?

Dave

Raymond,

Could not GSM-CDMA also serve to function on a GSM core network, but also give you the performance characteristics of the original W-CDMA proposal?

A while back you wrote:

Has anyone arguing against that IS-95 is the only 2G standard using CDMA. That CDMA-2000 is a clear upgrade path from IS-95. I haven't seen anyone arguing against that the airinterface of CDMA-2000 is more compatible to IS-95 then WCDMA is to GSM airinterface. They are not compatible at all. This is the whole point what the WCDMA camp is trying to get across. They don't want to have any backward ompability. Everytime you have to think about backward compability you will not get the most optimal system. If you want to have backward compablity you can upgrade the GSM network with EDGE which will give high speeds but will not give all the advantages that a complete new system can give you.
