Pardon me, but I would just like to voice an opinion on the PC question. Buying a computer with the largest HD (hard drive) is not really as important as the processor speed and memory. A standard 3.5 to 5-G drive is plenty of room and if your system comes with a Zip drive your space is infinite. Memory is really what determines the speed of computations so depending on how much number crunching you plan to do I would suggest added more memory. Standard machines now come with 32MB. To have multi-tasking operation (several applications and/or windows open at once) 64 is really better.

Buying a processor just below the fastest one available will save you money and give you all the speed and processing power you need. Upgrading from a 486 will be so wonderful; you'll be astonished at the difference.

Also ask if the HD is partitioned into at least 2 sectors. That way you can save files on one and have software on the working drive.

Kelvin

P.S. If you're in the market for a new monitor, consider a refurbished one. I save over 30% on mine vs. a brand new one and it carried the same warranty and guaranteed to work like new or my money back.

and if i may put in my two cents Lynn, if you want something small, i am tremendously happy with the new little sony. its fast (266 intel), lots of hd (4.3 gig), 64 megs of ram and its smaller than a couple of stacked magazines. check them out.

Hi Lynn...it's me, katmando, again...I've been down the road ref all the questions you have been asking. I use DOS-based programs from yesteryear that run fine on W98 tho W98 is still a little buggy in my experience. IMO, there are bigger issues to think about than RAM, Monitor (yes, I have a sony multiscan 17se), HD etc. How will you backup? How will you xfer old HD to new HD?

If you need more details, why don't we use e-m? I don't mind staying here so long as we don't clutter the thread too much. I'm at admdbm@aol.com.

Yes, I cussed for about a week after I bought my new PC. I missed my 486. But, the new PC is so cheap and wonderful that I never looked back.

You can do it. You will be sooooo glad. Bet you can do it without anyone's help altho it's nice to know that others have updated just like you are.
