Sorry for jumping in here again, but I need to clarify something so readers of the Raging Bull PINC thread don't get the wrong impression.

To: Kathy Knight-McConnell (Raging Bull thread):

Your comment on the Raging Bull thread regarding my evaluation of the COTS database follows:

"the COTS database isn't the fixit for the PC it is only a database to help find out where to get the fixes for non-compliant software discovered by the analysis of the MBCK software. It is not essential to the running of the program and is more an addition to it's value and diagnostics."

The MBCK software analysis does not find "non-compliant software". What it does is produce a list of file names that it encounters on a user's hard drive. It includes all files with ".exe" and ".com" extensions. It doesn't determine whether or not those files are compliant.

It is up to the user to determine:

1) which product each file belongs to
2) whether or not that product is compliant

To determine whether the product is compliant, the user can access the COTS database. One product at a time.

As the product exists today, the MBCK product does NOT automatically identify non-compliant software products. It does analyze the PC hardware, determine compliance, and produce a fix if necessary.

I agree with your comment that the COTS database "is not essential to the running of the program and is more an addition to it's value and diagnostics". Much of the same information is available from the IBM Y2K ready database.

Regards,

TED (all statements are my opinions only)
