>>> however, arms were sold to Iran in support of contra efforts in Nicaragua.. these funds were used to support the Iran contra efforts in Nicaragua because the Nicaraguan government shot down a US plane on Oct. 5 1986 and the only surviving crew member was taken into custody.<<<

Sorry...

But the end doesn't justify the means...

What if we used drug money to support the contras... Would that have made it right???

We had an act of treason perpetrated by the highest levels in the Reagan administration... They gave arms to the terrorists that stormed the U.S. Embassy and took American hostages... Using that blood money to finance the Contras was an illegal act... There is no comparison to this act of treason and the current Clinton Sex scandal... Forget about party affiliations and just look at the facts...

Actually Reagan's actions were in direct violation of the Boland Amendment which prohibited BY LAW (you know the rule of law) any military intervention in Nicaragua.

I think we should bring back the old prosecutors, rescind the resignations of Nixon and the pardons of Bush, dredge up the Gulf of Tonkin criminals and try them all. Even these crimes against the state were overlooked due to the expediency and practicality of the democratic Congresses. The only guy that gets off is Carter (too nice) and Ford (too dumb).
As for the economy, maybe AG and Rubin can get credit, but it was
the tax increases of 1993 that gave us credibility to our Japanese creditors and started us on the road to recovery. Through the IMF and world bank we endorse tax increases on 3rd world countries struggling with high debt; why deny the benefit of belt-tightening here in the U.S.
Another aspect of the Reagan administration were all of the tax shenanigans for capital depreciation, cap gains, etc. Boy those were the days, and the co-conspirators are still out there dreaming up more schemes that we can only get a whiff of, now. And some of the principals are still in Congress.
