David, I ranted on this issue at length. Why should there be options period? The truth is that the company can well afford to pay salaries in cash, and come up with an equitable formula for performance bonuses. But if they did that all of the costs would be out in the open because they would be enumerated on the income statement. By using options as a surrogate for salaries and bonuses they avoid public scrutiny (because the cost of options are nowhere to be found on the income statement), and consequently, they have carte blanche to pick investors pockets' in the shadows. And it shows up in the form of continuing dilution.

The truly ludicrous thing about repricing options is it removes one of the major arguments proponents have advanced in favor of the practice -- it puts employees and investors on the same side. What safety net do investors get? Would Duffield & Co. grant me a put option (at no cost to me). But that is exactly what we do for them when we allow them to reprice options.
