Raymond:

The patent in question is being disputed by Motorola and describes an early satellite-oriented application for CDMA. Since this was very early in the development of CDMA, the patent broadly describes the underlying non-terrestrial invention and the European patent office cited the existence of prior art from the late 70s. The case will move to an appeals process.

As noted, this was an early patent, which broadly described a possible satellite application, that has nothing to do with QC's central inventions of power control, rake receiver or soft handoff as they relate to mobile terrestrial wireless. Since MOT is looking to move Iridium to CDMA eventually, my view is that the company is attempting to ensure that it does not run afoul of QC's IPR for this application.

Best regards,

Gregg
