Gulf-Warning - Military Washington

biz.yahoo.com

<< ''Most of our forces in the Gulf are now in a threat condition called 'Charlie', which is the third out of four threat conditions,'' Bacon said. ''The definition of 'ThreatCon Charlie' is that an incident has occurred or intelligence has been received indicating that some form of terrorist action is imminent.''

''We believe that we have significant, credible intelligence suggesting the possibility of imminent terrorist action in the Middle Eastern region,'' he told reporters, refusing to be more specific. ''We have increased our alert posture and we are taking other actions,'' Bacon added. ''Commanders will take a variety of steps to reduce the exposure of troops.''

The State Department said on Monday it had received credible intelligence information on a possible attack and that the information applied to Kuwait, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Bahrain and Yemen.

But both agencies refused to comment on reports that Osama bin Laden, a Saudi dissident believed to be living in Afghanistan, might be at the center of the threat. He has been indicted as the man behind terrorist bombing attacks against U.S. Embassies in Kenya and Tanzania last August. >>
