TimC, MP3 technology is real. There's an awful lot of "white space" in most songs but a regular CD uses the same amount of space for a second of silence as for an orchestral arrangement. Think of MP3 as a "WinZIP" for music and you've got the idea (MPEG would be closer but what the heck).

The issues for audio are similar to those for cameras. Will manufacturers build storage into the box? Will ZIP/Clik!/SuperFloppies win over CF? But this time size and weight are more important because so many players are used by physically active people. Since mnaufacturers are always competing on price, putting the memory on a removable card lets them offer a cheaper box and sell more units without being subject to memory price fluctuations.

For what it's worth, that's my opinion.
