I think I read somewhere that Intel chips have 4 way associative (?) L1 cache, while AMD chips have 2 way associative (?) L1 cache. Could this explain why Katmai doesn't gain much, while the K7 should gain?

Tench, The K7 would benefit a lot more form the larger L1 cache due to the fact that it has more execution units to keep full and therefore the additional L1 cache will be a benefit. It seems that for the P6 generation cores, 32K is pretty close to the upper limit which is useful to the architecture.. Steve

Does that mean that the oversized 128K L1 cache on the AMD K7 isn't going to show any benefits, either?" 1) K6 core was designed around 64k L1. 2) PII core was designed around 32k L1. 3) Katmai core was designed artound 32k L1, but has 64k. 4) K7 core was designed around 128k L1. Maybe that has something to do with it--although I'm guessing the benfits of the extra L1 in Katmai will become clearer over time. Kevin
