Dave - I think both of your propositions are right on the money as to why the RBOC's haven't yet done much in the way of rolling out DSL service. I also think they are wrong if they think they'll lose much business by providing data and voice over a single line - any household with one or more teens can't have enough phone lines.

I also think another obstacle is the nature of the decision-makers at the phone companies. A conversation with a friend who works in marketing at a RBOC has left me with the conclusion that they are run to a great degree by folks who still function with a monopoly mentality. There's not much entrepreneurial energy and they seem to just make something available and expect people to buy it without any major advertising or efforts to expand customer awareness.

I have little doubt that successful competition from FON (and I would gladly switch if I could get ADSL internet access) will prompt the local phone cos. to become more aggressive in expanding DSL.

David,

Regarding your first proposition, let's see...

The phone company gets, what, $10-$15 per month for an additional line? And they could charge $50 per month for an ADSL hookup? Sounds like suicide to me!

I actually agree with your second proposition!

Whatever, I'd like to see PAIR keep trending up.
