Walt:

I love the wireless world. The operators are great, but not all understand the details of the technology. Many rely on the input of their vendors. So unfortunately the operator's opinions are shaped in large part by their vendors; that is true on both sides of the house.

I can say that based on my trips to Europe that until recently the operators really had not come up to speed on 3G details. They often recited dogma that was right out of the vendor's press releases. You and I both know that the W-CDMA proposal was far from complete; however if you ask these operators they would tell you it was finished. Can't change it we are too far along they would say. There was a big disconnect. Can't fault them, they were just reflecting what they were told.

I am obviously biased so you can take my comments with a grain of salt, but there is a growing realization that the cdma2000 proposal is in fact stronger. I believe the Chinese have an analysis that supports this; I'll see if I can post it. But recognize that this is not an issue of technical superiority. You know that. It is a matter of 2G product positioning between the haves and the have nots. Its sad, but it is what makes the world an interesting place.

You will note however, that on a parameter by parameter basis W-CDMA is beginning to adopt some of our technical approaches. Not out of compromise but out of necessity. After all we did learn a few things over the last 10 years! Look for more subtle changes.
