Pat, you are right in that Diablo could mean great things for us. I was VERY excited to hear about a Glide only Diablo...but I read somewhere- don't remember where- that they would be doing d3d as well...and it certainly isn't the kind of game where you need cutting edge technology. V2 owners wont upgrade for Diablo, and if a d3d patch comes out, TNT, Savage, and who knows, maybe even i740 and riva 128 folks may not need to upgrade...Boy, I sure hope it is Glide only.. Agree completely that paying for exclusivity for some of the big games would be a good idea. It's done all the time on consoles. Even if the exclusivity is for a limited time- perhaps Glide only for 2 months, then a d3d patch comes out. As for killer app, it has to require significant additional horsepower to warrant upgrading to 3dfx product, and 3dfx product must provide a significant performance gain over competitors. We had this with Q2 and Unreal and V2...I don't see it now. Unfortunately, I see the business model shifting from profitable retail to less profitable, higher quantity sales. Rampage may put us back to a full generation lead, but right now I see no compelling reason to upgrade from V2 or TNT to V3. Many will upgrade, no doubt, but I am talking about big numbers- I don't see it. I think the days of selling a million cards in the first month of new product (at retail) are over...I also think that some of the numbers for Rampage- $400-$600 are WAY too high...I don't know...maybe they could get away with it for a month if the product is that good and doesn't have competition...then the TDFX name would be trampled on by every hard core gamer and website because TDFX is exploiting their monopoly... In short, I don't know if I should be happy with their decision to go after the masses, as it may well be more profitable, or if I preferred the old gamer-centric TDFXx. You could argue that it is a sellout. Kind of like if Ferrari deciding to go into mass producing $30,000 sports cars (hmm...like Porsche, BMW, and Mercedes)
