I think their next innovation will be to embrace and extend Linux. MSFT Linux. Could happen. In fact I don't think they have a choice. I wouldn't even be surprised if some dev group is working away on it right now.

It fits in with their development model nicely, except for being standardized and interoperable. The basic R&D has already been done, the market has already been proven, all they have to do is capitalize on the work of others: play with the look of the interface, make it talk to NT server, maybe stick a Windows box into it, and start charging money. A lot of those all-MSFT shops will pay a hundred bucks apiece for it. Plus maybe they can get a little 'Embrace and Extend' action going there ;-)

They'd be stupid not to. NT looks to be a dying horse, right at the moment, though they can harvest the corpse for some years to come. If they put Windows login support in Linux they really have everything they need, and it would be trivial. I bet they would end up with a big fraction of the Linux market.

For that matter, why not Intel and IBM?
