I think their next innovation will be to embrace and extend Linux. MSFT Linux. Could happen. In fact I don't think they have a choice. I wouldn't even be surprised if some dev group is working away on it right now.

I agree, but they're going to have a hard time incorporating their changes into linux, as it's a trademark owned by Linus. I do think that they'll try, as they've got everything to lose. The other problem is the GPL legal problems that they'll come across - I can't see MSFT being very gung-ho about open sourcing whatever stuff they try to add.

They could certainly call it MSFT open Unix, or something, I don't know. I agree that they could sell it, but that would almost be admitting that NT doesn't cut it. There's also a lot of people using Linux because they dislike the philosophy of MSFT so much, and coopting Linux would only exacerbate this feeling, don't you think?
