I wholeheartedly agree that "Americans think that the 1st Amendment gives you the right to say anything you want to."

People do believe that, and these people are wrong.

If everyone could say everything they wanted to without consequence there would never be any action lost in a first amendment case. All speech would be protected at all times.

That's just silly. Of course all speech is not protected. Yelling "fire" in a crowded theatre, for instance.

And while I agree, one ought to be careful, that might be moreso to avoid slander suits than the sometimes too short arm of investment regulations.

I'm hoping someone with expert knowledge will be able to answer the question: Is front-running (or free-riding) regulated?
