As to your Question about the from field, I have been wondering that as well. Nothing special on my part.

Welcome to the thread and I assume to SI. Without a FROM there is no way to find out how long you have been here.

Most likely your user ID got dropped in the sign up process. Click on webmistress found at the bottom of any post and SI will fix it for you. They are usually quite responsive for such things. You could also PM Brad direct..he would probably be interested in the situation and is most likely the one who will fix the problem.

Here is one of Brad's posts #reply-6847613 click on his name and then take the PM (Personal Message) option.

Thanks for the input.

>>>>"The last time I looked into this it was much cheaper to buy an already built system from an OEM."<<<<

>>Let me offer an opportunity to question this assumption, I have found most (all?) major OEM's to be 10%-30% MORE expensive than a system I can put together from !'Net! resellers, if I compare part to part.<<

Actually it wasn't an assumption. Back in the early 90's I was doing some contract programming and some of my customers would occasionally inquire about which hardware to buy. I opened reseller accounts at a couple major distributors so that I could get what my customers wanted and make a few extra bucks. Eventually it lead me to seriously look at whether or not I should start putting boxes together. When I priced it out I couldn't compete with the Dells and Gateways of the world. Besides that I didn't wanted the headaches that would go along with that sort of endeavor. That's about as close as I ever got to building a box from scratch.

I haven't compared prices since the web as come into being. But based on what you're saying I'd better take a look.

>>The trick is buying off the Net(my favorite spot killerapp.com ).<<
I went there and had a similar experience to what happened to me at the Minotaur site. The killerapp main page loaded (very slowly) and I was able to scroll around. Then I made the mistake of clicking on the "Win the XXX.." icon. After waiting for about 10 minutes for the page to load I click on my browsers stop button. The "experience" made my system unstable and I had to reboot inorder to carry on. You'd think that the sites that are intended to sell computers would "dummy down" their site so that when folks like me land on their site, I'd be able to access all the web pages. I hope I'm not the only one left who's running a system that has 8MB of RAM. 8^0

Merry Xmas

Oh, this thread moves to fast!

Um, hehe, I was getting ready to build a box and did NOT get off to an auspicious start.

I had placed an order on the phone with a human (I think) a few weeks ago, a mother board and cpu, and was told it would be two weeks.

I didn't like it, but was resigned to the fact that I had waited too long and it was too close to the holidays.

Monday I decided to check in and found this:

dudecomputer.com

OH OH!

Guess what? They don't answer their phone or email either!

I called my Credit Card company, they never charged to it. Phew!

They cannot "unauthorize" a purchase, so I had to tear up my card, as they blocked it as if it was a stolen one and I am getting a new one.

NEAT! huh?

Anyway, I will post my specs here and begin ordering all the parts very soon.

Happy New Year!
