Sorry - I'm going to answer this one, but really concisely.

It's the combination of three factors. 1) five-line display with dynamic font size - several different symbol sizes, which actually really makes typing easier. Icon-driven user interface is cool. 2) stand-by time of nearly a week with light use. 3) design - colours and rounded edges.

Women and teenagers go for design, professionals for text-messaging and nerds for stand-by time. Ericsson has shown that colors don't help if the display is rudimentary - Qualcomm has shown that a decent display does not help if the stand-by time is less than a day with moderate use. Yes, we have all heard the arguments that 1) stand-by time does not matter 2) design does not matter 3) displays do not matter. We all have an aunt who bought a phone and did not even ask what the stand-by time is. I think the 4Q results will once again underline that combining several attractive features results in a product that is more than a sum of its parts.

BTW, that earlier remark by someone how outrageous it is that "even Finns design better phones than Qualcomm" was bigoted, narrow-minded and inimical to portfolio performance. If it has not dawned to investors by now that US companies *can* lose to Germans in software (SAP), Finns in mobile phones, Dutch in data networks (ENT) and half of EU in aeroplane manufacturing, it's time to sit down and do some thinking.

There are no magical ingredients in the Palo Alto water supply. I'm sorry, California, but the Pacific Century has been cancelled. Europe is the hot new high tech haven.

Dave:

Remember that the Q800 has no external antenna and that there are always some compromises necessary to serve the God of form over function...otherwise we would all be walking around with two pound phones that had a month of standby time and a week of talk time.

All the best,

Gregg
