Michelle,

Suggest you might want to invest in @home services. I received an awesome demo last week at local CompUSA. TCI tells us that we have to wait till spring. Lucky you.

Local Sunnyvale store ((408) 554-1733 Fax: (408) 345-4161) may have the same demo set up. There are bandwidth questions when the whole neighborhood signs up and gets cranking on the web. But, I have seen T1 lines degrade also.

On 56K, see what your ISP recommends.

Green with envy

RW

Michelle, re:What is a V.90 modem? Is that better than a 56K?

The V.90 stands for the final standard for 56K. I have two V.90 modems NOT ONCE HAVE CONNECTED GREATER THEN 32K the one at home, which is miles away from the telco CO, connects at 28, the one at my store connects at 32 when I'm lucky, I'm not that far from the CO eather, v.90 aka 56K is a sham in my mind. If you can get ATHM service do so. Cable modem service is an always on type service, therefore no telco time charge for connection. As far as ASDL, if you are close, with in a mile of the Telco CO you can get that but I would take the cable modem for it's always on feature hands down, that's why I have invested in ATHM!

@home is wonderful. my son has it but i cant get it. i know of people who have moved only in to a @home area. its always on and its fast. i dont know about the other dell adsl. i think that @home might be a good long term investment. but i also heard that the flat screen is not that good. something about it not being as clear as a regular monitor. but if anyone knows more about adsl tell me. the cost of @home is 40 a month. but i now have a second phone for 12 and internet service for 20. so i would get rid of the second phone and be paying 40 instead of 32 , not much of a difference.

Current Dell offering is a 15" LCD, resolution is 1024 x 768. The new generation of 18" LCD's has just been released, NEC, Eizo, and IBM offer them. Very nice, and the resolution is 1280 x 1024. 15" panels are around a grand, but can be found for less. The 18" panels just released will cost you 3600 bucks a piece. If you really want to spend, NEC makes a 20" LCD for around 5500 bucks, down from 7 grand. I find the new generation of LCD's crisper than CRT's, and when a digital connection standard is finalized, they will be even better. Right now, Princeton Graphics is offering a digital LCD, with graphics card included. Sun Microsystems is also offering a wide screen LCD, I can't remember what the resolution of that one is off the top of my head. As the price drops, I am hoping to upgrade next year to a dual LCD system with the 18" models. ADSL will also be an 'instant on' option. If you can get cable or ADSL where you live, forget about 56k...
