re: reaction to Bill

I was impressed with the sincerity of your thoughts, your personal views of marriage obligations, and your inuition about people. And ;ike you, I have been astounded that so many women find Clinton so attractive, and so many men are willing to follow and help him. I have known people like Clinton all of my life who exert an almost unconscious suggestive power over other people, seem automatically to be elected to office, and have many women crawling all over them. In mammalogy, such male leaders are known as "alpha" males and always lead their groups, sire the most offspring, and ultimately impress their traits on the herd or tribe. In many species, they have extraordinary physical powers and almost inexhaustible sexual prowess. Among humans, these people display "charisma."
Few men can understand or imagine what makes women sexually accessible to predators like Clinton and Kennedy. The instances of popular preachers who attract a cult-like following of both men and women are many. Some of them, not all, are themselves predators. It is the combination of the sexual charisma and the predatory instinct that makes such men extremely dangerous.
History and the Bible are replete with Alpha men who destroyed (or threatened, had the truth been known) their reigns with their sexual adventurism or philoprogenitiveness. Abraham (Hagar), Jacob (Rachel), Joseph (Potiphar's wife), David (Bathsheba), Solomon, Pericles, Caesar (Cleopatra), Anthony (Cleopatra), Jesus (Mary Magdalene), Pope Alexander VI, Henry VIII (Anne Boleyn), Jefferson, Andrew Jackson, Ataturk, John Kennedy, Ted Kennedy, Livingston (alpha -), Clinton, and many more. They all knew they lived in moralistic societies and were threatened by terrible enemies (how would you like Gingrich or God on your case), but they allowed their lusts or desire for heirs to overcome their ambition and self-interest. I would say this is one of the major themes (along with raw ambition) of history. Freud termed this self-destructiveness a death wish since he was a moralist, but it seems to me it is selfish genes insisting on gratifying the reproductive impulse against all reason.
Few men are in a position to criticize these great and powerful people. As Grey wrote, our humble lot confined our crimes and "Forbade to wade through slaughter to a throne ... [and} "To quench the blushes of ingenuous shame." Our little sins and crimes are of almost no historic import (there's always that damned butterfly stamping around here). But I think that before anyone denounces them, they should examine and admit their own faults. Obviously, on these terms, I don't have time to denounce them. The ability to resist temptation is nothing to brag about if we are not given the opportunity to be tempted.
I was never fortunate enough to have Marilyn Monroe come on to me. I wish she had. If I had succeeded in resisting her wiles (which I doubt), I could have made a fortune preaching about it. If I had fallen in with her plans, I believe I would have something wonderful to remember on these long nights and to confess before I jumped on Thomas Jefferson, John Kennedy, or Bill Clinton's bones.

"It is about sex, and it is about lying...given my druthers I'd druther seen him impeached over alleged financial impropriety."

Isn't it the sexual aspect that has really sent people into these apoplectic fits? The lying is certainly an issue, but in my experience when it comes to money or sex, people seem to lose a grasp of honesty. Seems both of these issues are loaded with shame for many, and they would rather lie than risk judgement by others.

Got to also say I respect your honoring your vows during your separation from your wife. At 36 I'm still single and am honestly wondering if I could commit the rest of my life to one person. Bill Mahr (host of ABC's Politically Incorrect) has a quote taht rings true for me, "Married people are the worst advertisement for their product."

All of my friends are always asking me when I'm going to get married just after they finish complaining about what a pain in the but marriage can be. In fairness I know a handful of couples who apparently enjoy the institution, and this does give a romantic like me hope, but that hope seems to be dashed more often than not by our country's 50% divorce rate, and my friends' anecdotes.

Tell me about marriage Hubert. Knowing what you do after 11 years, do you recommend it?

Divorce Statistics (1993)

U.S.A.

Total divorces granted: 1,187,000
Rate per 1,000 population: 4.7
Median age at divorce: Males: 35.6 Females: 33.2
Median duration of marriage: 7.2 years
Estimated number of children involved in divorce: 1,075,000
Rate per 1,000 population children under 18 involved in divorce: 16.8

(Source: National Center for Health Statistics)

The divorce rate has quadrupled from 4.3 million in 1970 to 18.3 million in 1996. (Quoted from Census Bureau's release about its MARITAL STATUS AND LIVING ARRANGEMENTS)

"Half of all children will witness the breakup of a parent's marriage. Of these, close to half will also see the breakup of a parent's second marriage."Furstenberg, Peterson, Nord, and Zill, "Life Course," 656ff. Cited on page76 ofThe Abolition of Marriage, by Maggie Gallagher

What the hell is going on here?!
