Wouldn't you guys think that IBM should split soon??? Maybe they'll wait a little longer and split 2 1/2 or 3 for one. I've only ever known of them to split 2 for 1, but it is getting pretty lofty in price per share for that. Thoughts??? El

Semi-OT........Hi Victor...I would take a hard look at HP before considering investing a dime there...

Obviously, HP has a storied history, and before 1997, one could argue that Lew Platt was a top manager...but in 1997/1998, HP has seemed to making all the WRONG moves.....what concerns me the most about HP is the total lack of urgency (and gaffs) I have sensed when seeing Lew Platt speak (or be interviewed)...a few months ago, during a speech, he joked about quitting (but no one got the joke, and the stock took a hit)...he later had to come out and state "I was only joking"........not good for a CEO to be so "out of touch"....only recently has he "stepped it up" (change mantra)...The fellow running Silicon Graphics (Rick Belluzzo) left a year ago because of the problems at HP....

HP has missed (something like) 6 of the last 9 estimates....although I will grant you that upper management (there) is now serious about turning things around....I would be hesistant if I were you...(I see HP, as an investment, as more like Motorola at this point then IBM (was)..

Note: I am not big on investing in turnaround stories...at this point, I think HP is more a turnaround story, then great company that has "slipped"....the slipping has gone on too long, IMO. I am not short HP.

In HP's favor is its continued strong brand, and dominant positions in certain segments....their attempts at (profitably) selling PC's has been a disaster (IMO)....maybe they should exit (save notebooks)..
I think, though, that if you are looking to invest in this "type" of company....IBM and Compaq are better bets...

If you do go long, I think I would wait until they prove themselves for a quarter or two...if they do..I think there should be plenty of upside left to buy in at that point (if indeed things have truly turned around)...look at IBM's run over the past few years...

Good luck with your investments....hope something I've said is useful.
