Hi Dan,

As I said before, I feel bad that your Windows9x experiences have been so bad. There must be some explanation for the problems you're having on your machine (it's still just that one machine, right?), but I'm at a loss. But I guess you and I agree that the problems you're having don't affect most Windows users.

>I think they don't run 5-10 Windows at a time

I've used many different systems (several of my own, other people's computer labs, etc.), and have never had a problem having 10+ windows open (if you just mean, the application windows); or any other problems, for that matter. The way I tend to web browse, btw, is to go to a page like News.com or whatever, and right click on every story I want to see and open that page in a new browser window (and I always have other applications open as well (email, word, etc., and even Netscape at times).

FWIW, I bought a Dell Desktop about 2 months ago. Unfortunately they sent the wrong sound card so I had to send the system back and get a new one (exactly why they couldn't just let me swap the sound card, I don't understand). Anyway, upon receiving both systems I did the same thing--wipe the drive (I don't like all the PC OEM junk) and start fresh. This new system, for some reason, seems a bit less robust than the original. It also seems a bit slower.

Merry Christmas to all of you,
-Sal

Ps. Dan, are you relying on the default Windows drivers for your computer? You might try update the system BIOS, other BIOSes (sound, video, modem, etc.), and all drivers to the latest ones from the manufacturers. It's a shot in the dark, but maybe you get lucky (video card especially could be the culprit).

Microsoft Targeted MPU Biz

electronicnews.com

Don't know if anyone picked this up.

Kempin's memo discussed various threats to Microsoft's business, including the trend toward low-priced PCs. "The current
(price) decreases for PC manufacturers will make us a much higher component of the system cost than ever before....While we
have increased our prices over the last 10 years other component prices have come down and continue to come down...The
danger does exist that more PCs might get shipped without an OS and we should not take this lightly!"
