You know one of the things I just can't get my arms around is why NTT would want to go with WCDMA at all. They are not burdened by any TDMA infrastructure. Why, if you're starting from scratch, would you want to build a hybrid network? Are there any reasons why a hybrid network might be better?

And the same goes for the Chinese. From Tero's article:

"GSM manufacturers have been making a case that launching a new second generation digital mobile telephony standard in China would be a huge waste of resources when GSM has soaked up so much investments and the third generation upgrade should be just 2-3 years down the road. The Chinese government appears to be leaning into their way at the moment."

Why not skip right ahead to a "pure" CDMA system?
