The cellular system that will be replaced
or overbuilt is the PDC system. The PHS system is another system that's
it's something like a local network cellular system. The PDC system is
a TDMA system similar to the US TDMA system. They have their own core network signalling standard. They will probably use the GSM signalling
interfaces for their 3:rd generation standard to be able to have roaming to the rest of the world.
Another thing that has been mentioned here is that Docomo and the other operators are not really experts and is dependent on the suppliers when it comes to issues like IPR.That is just bullshit Docomo knows more about designing cellular systems then most other companies. They have designed PHS,PDC and have made a major contribution to the specificationwork for WCDMA.The only thing they don't do is the actual manufacturing of equipment. The same goes for the other operators involved like BT,France tele,DB,TIM,Telia and the others. They know exactly what is going on./R

Thanks AGAIN Clark...

I now realize I hadn't thought through the question properly.

And it is at the interface that WCDMA would "distinguish" itself from CDMA2000, although unneccesarily so according to Q, in addition to the chiprate and other "neat" features?

And yes, the gist of my question nonetheless remains the same. Is there any bona fide technical reason why NTT would be better off with WCDMA than CDMA2000? Or the Chinese for that matter?
