BTW, when you compare today's valuations with an arbitrary period in history, namely 1996, aren't you engaging in relativism?

Which brings up another thing I've been wondering about. What is your method for arriving at an appropriate valuation for a stock? Is it just your gut feel for whether industry conditions are going to improve or deteriorate, or are you using a quantitative model?
