Dow Five

With Monday's close, the Dow was up 1,085 points or 14% for 1998. I've already mentioned how a few stocks within the S&P 500 and Nasdaq are driving those indexes but the situation is similar in the Dow.

Only five Dow stocks have contributed 850 (78%) of the Dow's 1,085
points gained this year. The five stocks in order of contribution are
IBM, Wal-Mart, Merck, United Technologies, and McDonald's. IBM
alone has contributed 26% or 288 points to the Dow's gains this year as the stock has gone from 104 to 176. >>
