Truthtellers for me would include Truman, Carter, Ford and Eisenhower.

Ike's big fib has been forgotten longer than most of the posters here have been alive. Total public denial of espionage flights over Russia, until Francis Gary Powers' U2 was shot down while on a spy mission. Of course that was ok with most of us over here, then and now... didn't play so well over there.

And then there's Kay Summersby, if you really want to dish the dirt.

They all lie, sometimes, as do most of us. Don't know much about Truman, but Jimmy said he'd 'lusted in his heart,' to the dismay of several people. Understand, some people believe the mere thought of committing adultery is a sin. I remember how mean-spirited the attacks on President Carter were -- yet today he's probably got a callous or two from pounding nails for Habitat for Humanity, and I think he still teaches a Sunday School class in Plains, Georgia. Still, conservatives hated and ridiculed the man.

The biggest lie of all is that this is about something any deeper than the obvious game of political hardball.

Brent, I'd probably have to agree on putting Harry Truman down as being relatively truthful.

But when, in the midst of all this sordid slime, I need a light moment, I picture this scene:

The media confronts Truman and asks personal questions about his sex life. He would have put Harrison Ford in AIR FORCE ONE to shame. Our ears would STILL be burning. And I have to say that I wish Clinton had been more inclined to that response. I would have respected such a reaction more, and then we could be DONE with this HE TOLD A LIE chanting.
