Your "last mile" may actually be several miles from the CO...CO may not be outfitted to handle high-speed traffic...

You got it -- 36 miles, in fact, and while the CO backs up to fiber, they still have a fair share of technical problems getting the signal from copper to fiber.

Same situation if HIS "last mile" is also several miles away...

I doubt that's much of a problem -- most of my destinations are located in or near big cities. But, your point is well taken.

I've checked into just about every alternative for an improved connection at a reasonable cost, including satellite. For my needs and budget, there is nothing better than what I currently have, at least not right now.

But, the point I was trying to make earlier is that the rest of the backbone will also have to make some huge improvements if any of the xDSL solutions really become popular.
