Re: "Something doesn't quite compute. I wonder if Cherry Sanders is going to unload a bombshell when he announces Q498 "earnings" next month?"

I agree. This telegraphing of price erosion isn't what one would expect from a company that is expanding market share. And Q4 isn't over yet!

Paul, maybe the public got smart and decided that the performance difference between 350MHz and 400MHz wasn't worth >$100. Or maybe people would rather have a "Genuine Intel PII" ... if it only cost a few dollars more than a K6-2. Or maybe box makers decided that they could sell a 400MHz Celeron for more than a K6-2 and pocket some nice profits.

Yesterday, the checker at my locate supermarket was going on and on about how she bought a PC for her child for Xmas. "We got a 350MHz processor!" she beamed .. as though it was a Cray supercomputer. She never mentioned the CPU manufacturer.

It makes me wonder if many people will comprehend that a "K6-3" is any different than a "K6-2". Without a significant branding effort by AMD, Sharptooth may get a dull reception in the marketplace. And I can't wait for some magazine to compare Quake on a CeleronA with a Voodoo card to an equally priced K6-3 system with econo-video.

IMHO, the analysts who are estimating AMD's future ASPs at around $100 are probably right.
