John Lloyd Stephens (explorer) and Fredrick Catherwood (Daguerotype photographer) were the first to "discover" the Yucatan and did a lot of preliminary work on the Mayan Calendar which is more accurate than the Georgian one in use today. Incidents of Travel in Yucatan chronicles their travails there. It's a classic and was first published in London, 1841. Mr. Goldfinger owns one on the complete collections of the original Dageurotypes as well as the two original books (the other is Incidents of Travel in Central America)
