IN THE NEWS / Crude Oil Moves Up While Natural Gas Goes Down

Crude-oil futures edged up Monday, reflecting further tensions
with Iraq.

Traders said U.S. warplane attacks on Iraqi air-defense positions
in northern Iraq induced some light buying.

President Clinton said U.S. pilots took "appropriate action" when
they attacked Iraqi positions in northern Iraq after being fired
upon, but he provided few details of the incident. Mr. Clinton
said the planes returned safely to their bases.

The incident followed statements by Iraq's trade minister,
Mohammed Mehdi, Monday that Iraq will reject a further extension
of the United Nations-supervised oil-for-food program and will
demand the expulsion of all U.N. personnel working for the
program. However, Mr. Mehdi quickly retracted the comments at a
press briefing. (WSJ)

NYMEX natural gas ends down, front months hit new lows

NYMEX Hub natural gas ended lower across the board Monday in
fairly active trade, with front months driven to new lows by
concerns about a huge storage overhang and mild weather early in
the week, sources said.

January, which expires Tuesday, skidded 9.3 cents to close at
$1.788 per million British thermal units after diving late to a
new contract low of $1.78. February, which also set a new
benchmark of $1.78, settled 8.9 cents lower at $1.789. Other
deferreds finished down 0.2 to 6.3 cents.

''There was good MOC (market-on-close) selling today just like on
Thursday. We could go a little lower, but there's a little (cold)
weather coming in,'' said one Texas-based trader.

While the prospects for colder weather later this week may limit
the downside near-term, many traders expected bloated storage
eventually to drive the market lower unless much colder
temperatures arrive.

WSC expects East Coast temperatures to start the week at four to
nine degrees F above normal, then cool to as much as 11 degrees
below normal Thursday before moderating to near normal by the
weekend. The Midwest will see a similar pattern, with above
normal readings Monday and Tuesday cooling to as much as 12
degrees below normal Thursday, then warming to normal or slightly
above normal Friday and Saturday.

In Texas and the West, temperatures mostly will average above
seasonal for the week.

The NWS six- to 10-day forecast released late Monday calls for below
normal temperatures in the upper Midwest and Great Lakes, with normal
readings expected for the Gulf Coast and Southeast. Most of the
western half of the nation and New England will average above normal.

Technical traders noted January broke key support today and set a new
contract low of $1.78. Major buying should emerge at $1.61, which is
the spot continuation low for the year.

Minor resistance was seen in today's gap at $1.84-1.86, but only
a close above key resistance in the $2.12-2.19 gap will turn
sentiment bullish. Next resistance was seen in the mid-$2.30s.

In the cash Monday, Henry Hub swing quotes skidded about a dime
to near the $1.80 level. Midcon pipes slipped about a nickel to
the mid-to-high $1.70s. In the West, El Paso Permian was more
than 10 cents lower in the low-$1.70s.

Gas at the New York city gate was pegged more than five cents
lower in the low-to-mid $2.20s, while Chicago was down eight
cents to $1.86.

The NYMEX 12-month Henry Hub strip slipped 4.5 cents to $1.937.
NYMEX said an estimated 86,466 Hub contracts traded today, up
sharply from Thursday's revised tally of 24,108.

NYMEX will close at 1300 EST Thursday and will be closed Friday
for the New Year's Day holiday.

Is this the Holy Grail?

Imagine a full-coverage well log image database that goes all the way back to the late
40's. Then imagine sophisticated pattern recognition being applied to reveal by-passed
hydrocarbon. This is one initiative at International Datashare Corporation (TSE -
"IED"). This Company has been listed on the TSE for 30 years and is a leader in data,
data analysis, and information management. In the past, the Company simply sold
datasets and database management systems but is now evolving into an "interpreter" of
that data seeking to capitalize more directly on the knowledge held within its databases.
