<<We rural types do not have natural gas. Our only option is propane. Propane is not cheap by any means. I use it for hot water and my stove and the last time I was filled-up, its was $1.86/gallon. Other people pay more than this, as much as $2.09 [from the same company--cost is based on past usage].>>

Wow! I just put 500 gallons of propane in my tank for 55 cents/gallon. In the ten years I've been on propane (using ~1,000 - 1,500 gallons per year) I've never paid more than $1.33 a gallon in the middle of the winter. I didn't realize there was that much price variance.

Incidently, since I started burning my woodstoves on a regular basis my propane consumption has gone down almost 50%. ; )

Hi Lynn.

I believe they had a few fires last year in and around Montreal during the ice storm and they were the reason for the new Standards on the ones now sold in Canada. The new ones don't have to tip to shut off they just have to be bumped a bit and off they go. Also they new ones can not be reduced in their heat output--they are either on or off. That feature and the new 1K fuel are supposed to reduce the smell smoke soot and general dirtyness of the heaters. I don't like the use of propane except in furnaces designed for its use. Being under pressure and explosive I prefer kerosene. If we have another Ice Storm or if the Y2K problem develops I guess I'd take either.
