Franz, That isn't the Fed moving around margin requirements. The Fed sets the max boundaries and the brokerages can do what they want as long as they don't exceed the max margin levels.

Individual brokerages are changing (tightening) what they require. I doubt there is much altruism in this action, as in cooling the speculation, it is more to protect their butts on margin loans if the Inuts crash. Although, if that precipitated the entire market going into a bear that would certainly be bad news for the brokerages. But there are an awful lot of powerful forces living off the market food chain that I think they could put enough spin control on to avoid that.
