That makes sense, why not have a lower tier portal site for such merchandise, and have it deliv. ups etc. (i.e.fullpay member vs.intermitent website user) We need access to build up the numbers in membership off the strong base already established.

The more I think about this concept, the more I like it. I agree that Costco and Sams are not the competition, but not because of the difference between first line and brand name merchandise and other types.

As you say, it will be primarily through selling different types of items than Costco, athough they will most likely sell a number of the same items cheaper. Most of what I buy at Costco is food, small houshold items for cleaning, garbage, etc., and occasionally some clothing and a book or two.

The difference is between wholesale and retail. RDIM's vision is to not only to bring together a fragmented wholesale consumer buying market. It is also to develop and enlarge that market by bringing in more manufacturers, and, most important, to make that market available to a vastly wider audience than it currently is, using the internet. They are looking at the whole world as their market, although they will be concentrating on the United States and Asia. There is no reason that market will not include a number of Costco members.

The concept is both simple and brilliant IMO. The only question is do they have the means to make it work.
