Catcher,

I left a company after many years and pulled my 401K out and into schwab. My IRA this year is up 72%, do you think I would have gotten this out of standard 401K funds? I think not!

I am not trying to sound smart because most of my gain was probably luck, but it all spends the same. So I am not relishing the idea of of getting back into my new 401K and not being able to manage the money, but the benefits of a 401K far out weigh not contributing in order to mange your money, i.e., company match, tax defered, etc...

Oh well!

RE: 401(k) trading.

There is another alternative to employees who wish to trade equities with the money in their 401(k)--change employers and roll the 401(k) into a self-directed IRA.

That turns out to be one of the top benefits I have realized from leaving an employer in 1995. I have been able to triple my 401(k) seed money, but, in this market, everyone is a genius. <g>
